Hey Everyone
I’m Pam, an avid traveller based in Birmingham.
Last year I went to Mexico for the frst time and decided to visit Cancun. It was my first time travelling in that region so I decided Cancun would be an ideal first location. I was not disappointed.
If you’ve never been before then Cancun is a good central location to visit for first timers to Mexico and highly recommended.
The weather is amazing and with plenty of excursions you’re able to mix your days between having planned trips and nice chill out days by the pool and enjoying the all inclusive restaurants.
We stayed at Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancun All Inclusive. Although it’s a smaller resort compared to others we thoroughly enjoyed staying here. The customer service was great, restaurants served amazing food and the beach and sea views were amazing. Another great thing about this hotel and stretch of the beach was that there was less seaweed which can be a bit of an issue so be mindful of this.
Here’s what we got up to and if it’s your first time in Cancun I would highly recommend the following based on my personal experience.
Coco Bongo – if you’ve never heard of this it’s an iconic night club in Cancun. If you’re not into the whole city club scene or drinking don’t be put off. I’m not into that either but going there is a totally different experience in itself. If you’re able to do so then pay for the Gold upgraded ticket.
You’ll get a waiter who will look after you all night (be sure to tip when you arrive and before you leave). You’ll enjoy good music, dancing and great theatrical acts which are out of this world. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s truly an amazing experience and you’ll definitely want to go back again for sure.
Be sure to plan a chill out day the day after. You’ll be strolling back to your hotel in the middle of the night like we did but it was worth it.
Be sure to go around that area in the daytime too. You have the famous Hard Rock Cafe and Senior Frogs both of which are great places to eat, drink and chill for a while. Across the road you have the famous Flee Markets and we were spoilt for choice with a huge variety of shops.
Be sure to barter for good deals. Silver is cheap in Mexico too so if you’re after a few pieces make sure you check out all the shops and see what you fancy. I made sure I came back with a few lovely pieces to add to my jewellry collection.
Chichen Itza Ruins – visit the iconic ruins set in the city of Yucatan. It’s a long day and a long drive to get there but you’ll be visiting one of the New 7 Wonders of the World so it’s worth it. You don’t get to do that every day that’s for sure.
Discover the culture and hidden meaning behind the Ruins and how they originated. If you love exploring on holiday and sightseeing then this is definitely a must.
After visiting Chichen Itza we visited the Sacred Cenote (meaning sacred well) which was absolutely breathtaking to see in person. According to locals the Sacred Cenote was a place of pilgrimage for ancient Mayan people who would conduct sacrifices into it. Who would’ve guessed that right?
You can also take a swim in the sacred well but just be mindful the water is quite deep in there. Cenote waters are meant to have healing effects so you will be looking and feeling great after for sure.
We ended our day with a trip to the old town of Yucatan. With beautiful retro streets and old school buildings it was nice to see some traditional culture and soak the atmosphere in. After a late lunch we headed back to the hotel for some much needed rest.
Viva Mexico was another great find and something which was totally unique and different. Have dinner on floating Mexican themed boats and enjoy the music along the way. A truly enjoyable experience of authentic Mexican culture, music and vibes. Another great find for evening entertainment.
And last but not least. Xplore Por Xcaret. If you’re a dare devil then definitely look at this one. A mixture of walking in the water in the caves …never again for me. Quad biking in caves and through a jungle. Zip lining, not once but 7 times, yes that’s right 7 times over and each time we climbed higher and higher. A first time for me and I was definitely out of my comfort zone but I’m so glad I did it.
I’m glad we booked the trip for the evening and it was dark so I couldn’t see what was down below. After all that adrenaline rush and a fair few moments of literally being scared I was still smiling in the end.
We stayed for 12 nights but to be honest 10 nights is more than enough. Make sure you pack plenty of high factor sunscreen, you’re going to need it. If you’re like me and a bit of an explorer then make sure you make the most of the excursions to take in all of the local history and culture.
Be sure to factor in your chill out rest days too and make the most of your hotel complex and its amenities.
